Chapter twenty-one

Salted Rims

“So I spin Rosalee around and she’s supposed to freeze when she’s facing away from me, and then we both shoot our arms straight up like this. POW!” Alex raised his hands straight up, demonstrating his sister’s styling move in the New York DanceSport Championship five years earlier.

Perched on her pair of chairs, her knees bumping against the underside of the table’s wooden top, Cynthia listened intently, only slightly distracted by the heavenly flavor of her tenth taco. It was the breakfast one, filled with scrambled eggs, chorizo, diced potatoes, and cheese, and Alex had been right; she loved it. They had tried sitting at a high top, but it put her head so high that the pendant light over the table had been in her face. The loud music, continuous roar of conversation, and riot of scents at Taqueria La Plaza were a bit much for her, but his calming presence and plate after plate of tacos kept her from feeling overwhelmed.

“And right then, wouldn’t you know because of course it did, the strap on the right side of her dress, the only strap holding the front part of her dress up mind you, it let go and her top flipped down like this.” Alex’s hands made a flipping motion in front of his chest.

Cynthia’s eyes went wide as taco eleven, a pulled chicken work of art with cheese, lettuce and pico, froze just short of her mouth. “Please tell me she was wearing a bra.”

He grinned and shook his head. “Nope. Latin dresses are pretty skimpy. The dress had support built in like yours, but there was, shall we say, a missing safety feature.”

She carefully fitted the taco between her fangs and took a big bite. “What’d you do?” she asked, her hand covering her mouth.

“I saw the strap let go and I lunged forward, reached around her and flipped her top back up, then spun her to face me, all while staying on time. We had to improvise and dance in closed position with her facing me for the rest of the heat to make sure no one could see if it slipped again. Poor thing’s eyes were as big as saucers and she’s dancing with one hand pinning her top to her chest and trying to make it look like we planned it.” He chuckled, shaking his head. “Good times.”

She picked up another breakfast taco. “Did the judges see it happen?” she asked, biting off half of it.

He took a sip of his margarita and frowned, looking at it critically. “Evidently not, because we somehow got first place in Cha-Cha. But after that, Rosalee insisted the Lombardis always quadruple stitch any neck straps.”

“I need to ask them about that.” Cynthia motioned to her cleavage’s fuzzy expanse with the remainder of the taco. She had changed into her blue cocktail dress before they left the ballroom and it was finally getting its chance to work its magic. “I’ll need Kevlar straps. You wouldn’t stand a chance with these behemoths in an emergency.
